Dear friends and colleagues, The Faculty of English Language and Literature at the University of Athens is presently being threatened by the Greek government’s decision (with a demand that it take effect immediately) to merge five independent Departments of the School of Philosophy into a single Department of “Foreign languages and philology.” Obviously, the focus is on language learning rather than on cultivating the literary, cultural and linguistic disciplines developed in the five languages through which our students access knowledge: English, French, German, Italian and Spanish. This merger, based on no long or even short term planning, nor on any studies which show definite economic benefits from the unification, is both unwarranted and short-sighted. It brings to a sudden death Departments which have been contributing significantly to intercultural dialogue in Europe and have been cultivating interdisciplinary studies of excellence in Greece and abroad.
